WordPress FAQs
A content management system (CMS) is a web application that enables website owners to manage their websites. It allows you to add, edit or delete pages, edit content, update images and manage site features. It replaces the need to edit HTML on a local computer and upload files via FTP.
WordPress is an open source, flexible website content management system that powers approximately 25% of all websites globally. WordPress enables non-technical website administrators to quickly and easily update and manage their websites from a web-based admin area. WordPress is used by organizations like The New Yorker, CNN, Sony Music, BBC America, Best Buy, Harvard Business Review and many others.
A plugin is PHP code that adds a specific functionality to a WordPress website. Plugins enable website administrators to easily add particular features to their website like an e-commerce capability, form generation, additional security or automatic backups to name a few.
WordPress is frequently updated (typically 6-12 times per year) to add new features or to increase security. In addition, specific security plug-ins can be installed to further increase security (recommended).
Based on our experience we think WordPress is the best CMS available for small to medium-sized businesses. However, some WordPress themes are of low-quality and have given the platform a bad reputation. In addition, it’s important to keep WordPress up-to-date for optimum security.
Flash support officially ends in 2020 but we’ve already seen a marked decline in Flash usage. WordPress plugins are available that create “animation” within WordPress using the latest version of HTML. We prefer this approach because it works on Apple devices, is inexpensive to set up and can be updated by you at any time.
WordPress runs best on a Unix/Linux server with PHP 7. (PHP 7 runs considerably faster than PHP 5 so your website will load and function more quickly.)
Absolutely. We provide training so you will be completely comfortable updating your site. However, some clients prefer we update their site for them. For these clients, our maintenance plans are a cost effective way to keep your site up-to-date.
Yes. We include training for each WordPress site we develop. We also provide 45 days of support after launch so if you are unsure how to make an update in WordPress just give us a call. We’d be glad to help.
